Check what you are comparing
Before changing your entire plan, compare how the tests were taken. A paused practice test, an unfamiliar format, or a day with interruptions may not provide the same evidence as an uninterrupted test. Different providers can also estimate scores differently. Keep the provider, conditions, and section results beside the total.
A single result is a starting point for questions. Look for repeated patterns across recent work: the same concept missed, a recurring slow step, or many uncertain correct answers. You do not need to assume every change in a practice estimate represents a change in ability.
Make the next session narrower
A broad instruction such as ‘do more Math’ can repeat the same experience. Select a smaller target, such as translating a word problem into an equation or identifying the boundary between two independent clauses. Work a few examples slowly and explain each step aloud or in writing.
Then remove the notes and try new examples. Check the work immediately enough to notice the error, but give yourself a chance to reason before looking at the explanation. If you still cannot explain the method, return to instruction instead of only increasing the number of questions.
Use a decision rule for the next full test
Write what you expect to be different on the next full test: ‘I will answer requested quantities rather than intermediate values’ or ‘I will move on when I cannot identify a method.’ Check that behavior in a shorter set first. Schedule the longer test when it can tell you whether the change transferred under timing.
If the same obstacle persists despite careful review, bring a small set of worked examples to a teacher or tutor. Showing where your reasoning diverged is more useful than saying you need a higher score. No practice routine guarantees a particular score increase; use your work to judge what is helping.
Try this next
Pick one repeated mistake and write a seven-day experiment: the skill, two practice sessions, and the evidence you will check.
